Australian Standards

All rag bolts are designed using our computerised engineering program and manufactured to Australian Standards. They are manufactured with either mild or high tensile steel, with hot-dip galvanising applied to withstand corrosion and improve long-term durability.

These bolts are typically supplied in a “U” formation for general use, with diameters ranging from M12 to M36. For larger bolt assemblies, such as M30, M33, and M36, an “L” formation is used to provide additional stability. Each bolt is engineered to suit the pole application, ensuring proper fit and strength for both standard and custom pole installations.

Specifications

Each rag bolt assembly includes:

  • A rag bolt former-template
  • Two nuts and two washers per thread
  • Options for prefabricated welded bolt cages in a range of sizes

These components are designed to hold the rag bolts in place during the concrete pour, maintaining the correct alignment for pole erection. By maintaining precision in the concrete foundation, the pole can be securely and accurately positioned once installation takes place.

We also manufacture custom bolt cages and assemblies for:

  • Shallow concrete foundations
  • Building slab installations
  • Above-ground mobile foundations

All assemblies are manufactured to meet the engineered foundation design and specific site conditions.

For project efficiency, rag bolt assemblies can be delivered prior to pole delivery, giving you ample time for foundation curing before column installation. This process helps streamline project timelines and reduces installation delays.

If required, we can recommend experienced installation partners to manage the foundation setup. Please see our procedures section for more details on rag bolt foundations and concrete procedures.

Screwpile

As an alternative to traditional concrete foundations, screwpiles offer a fast, practical solution. These screw-in steel piles can be installed and ready to accept the pole within 30 minutes, eliminating the wait time for concrete to cure.

Each screwpile foundation can be supplied with:

  • Baseplates
  • Cable entry slots for easy cable access and connection

This method is ideal for temporary installations, time-critical projects, and sites with difficult ground conditions such as rock. Screwpiles offer excellent stability and can be used across both urban and regional applications.

Frequently asked questions

A rag bolt is a steel bolt used in structural foundations to anchor poles or columns. It is embedded in concrete and usually formed in a U or L shape for improved hold and strength.

Caging bolts refer to bolts that are assembled within a bolt cage, a prefabricated frame that holds bolts in the correct position during concrete pouring. This ensures the pole baseplate aligns with the foundation bolts.

A rag bolt assembly includes the bolts, nuts, washers, and template used to anchor a pole or structure to a concrete foundation. These are custom-made to suit each pole.

Galvanised high tensile rag bolts are commonly used to fix poles into concrete foundations, offering excellent strength and corrosion resistance.

This is another name for a rag bolt, specifically referring to its role in securing structural columns or poles to a concrete base.

The main types are U-bolts, L-bolts, and straight anchor bolts. G&S Industries supplies U and L types in various diameters for pole foundations.

Use the correct bolt grade and diameter for your application, ensure proper tensioning, and avoid overloading. All our bolts are engineered to meet the structural loads required for poles.
